"Obscured By Clouds" - Pink Floyd (1972)
Pink Floyd's seventh album..."Obscured By Clouds"...dropped a little less than a year before their iconic monster album "Dark Side Of The Moon" was released. In fact, the band was already rubbing sticks and stones together for "Dark Side..." before being called away to provide the music for the French film..."The Village." Yes, this is another Pink Floyd soundtrack, but this one is not so easily dismissed.
"Obscured By Clouds" is a pretty solid spin with a little bit friendlier vibe. All the grim and foreboding tension would come later. There are tasty rock moments and light psych-dustings, but the band is clearly slipping deeper into the slide zone of experimental prog-rock. And you can hear the band getting closer to that "Big Pink" sound.
There are 10 tracks; 4 are instrumentals. All are pleasing to the ear, although a couple of tracks do have an unresolved feel about them. One can also hear a little "DSOTM" and even "Animals" on the wax, as well. Snippets of ideas, anyway. And I really dig that! "Obscured..." is not one of my top five favorite Pink Floyd squares, but this certainly cracks my top ten. A pleasant surprise.
"Obscured By Clouds" - Pink Floyd (back)
Favorites include the gentle, dreamy "Wot's...Uh The Deal" and sounds like something the Beatles might've recorded for their last album when everyone was still half-way friends. "Childhood's End” is a grim reaper with a fantastic solo and foretells "DSOTM." Hints of greater things yet to come. And the drone-like opener "Obscured By Clouds" sets the table nicely for the main course.
I picked up this OG copy for about $15. The album has no words on the front, but for a blue Harvest logo. The cover shows some wear but has no seam splits. The vinyl looks a strong VG and plays better than it looks. This almost completes my Pink Floyd collection. I'm still in need of "A Saucerful of Secrets" and "The Division Bell." I also need "The Wall." And I know that's not a hard album to find, but I just can't seem to find a copy in my sweet spot. Everybody's trying to get rich off of "The Wall." Whaddyagonnado!?
