TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Hard Attack" - Dust (1972)

"Hard Attack" - Dust (1972)

Not as heavy as one might think, but there are definitely a few bangers.  Two of them dive into the darker end of the bottomless pool.  Dust brings some heavy hard rock with some dustings of protometal.  The New York trio brings the riffage, and with better-than-average lyrics and vocals.  It's all good, but it's the bass that's the star of the bar to my ears.

Surprisingly, there are a few melodic chillouts on the album as well, but they play nice without sounding wimpy.  I mean, when it's time to bang, they bang.  And when it's time to chill, they chill.  Maybe Dust should have stayed in one lane, who knows?  But they pull off each equally well, and I've been spinning this one a lot.  Sometimes you don't get what you want, but you do get what you need.  If you are a lover of that early 70's rock discourse, Dust is another underground hider to check out.

"Hard Attack" - Dust (back)

"Hard Attack" - Dust (inside gatefold)

Favorites include:
"Walk In The Soft Rain"
"Suicide"
"Learning To Die"

The record comes in a nice gatefold cover with the inside showing band member photos and song lyrics. (Later issues have non-gatefold covers.)  The vinyl is on the cool Kama Sutra label with the blue Adam-Eve variation.  It is a Sonic Recording Products pressing denoted by "SON" etched in deadwax.   And mastered by Joe Brescio.  Track B2 is listed as "I Been Thinkin" on the back cover.  On the label/inner gatefold, "I Been Thinkin'".   The awesome front cover artwork is by legend Frank Frazetta, famous for his fantasy and science fiction drawings.  The sound quality of this pressing is excellent.  This was a bit of a pony-up, but still a little below the median price on Discogs.

After Dust broke up, each went on to do great things.  Guitarist Richie Wise, among other accomplishments, was the producer for the first two KISS albums.  Marc Bell, better known as Marky Ramone, went on to drum for The Ramones.  Bassist Kenny Aaronson later recorded and performed with Sammy Hagar, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Bob Dylan, and many others.  Another pretty cool "a-ha"... Kenny provided the cool bass action on The Stories' "Brother Louie."  And in 1988, he was named Bassist of the Year by Rolling Stone.
