TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Fantasy" - Fantasy (1970)

"Fantasy" - Fantasy (1970)

Fantasy's self-titled album is a mix of psych and prog, a little heavier on the prog side yet somehow stays mostly grounded.  There are a couple more jammier rockers, one of which is an instrumental track..."Stoned Cowboy"...that received a lot of heavy radio play for a fairly long minute.  If Jefferson Airplane Grace Slick vocals are your thing, or perhaps if the occasional Frumpy legend Inga Rumpf snags your swag, you'll definitely enjoy this.  And singer Lydia Janene Miller's vocals belie her age.  She was just 16 when she hooked up with the band to record this album.  Miller sounds like a girl who could sell seashells down by the seashore, and customers would still hit the tip jar.  Good stuff.

As for this band that called Miami home, Fantasy's songs often slip into some kind of art-rock wigout, and at times, sound pretty dang ambitious.  Don't overpay, but if you see this square in the wild for under $20, you should grab it.  The album cover is designed in a strange, if impractical, manner: the vinyl comes from a different direction than expected, and when opening the inner gatefold, the band photo appears upside down.  I don't know what they were thinking.  A mistake at the pressing plant, or just playing mind games.  This was their only album.

"Understand"
"Stoned Cowboy"
"Circus Of Invisible Men"

This album has a cut corner, the vinyl is VG+, and it came with its original lyric record sleeve.  "Fantasy" has been in my new arrivals box at home for nearly three months.  I'm still catching up.  It's not work, I just spin when I'm in the mood and have time.  It's a good problem to have, right?  Anyway, I picked this copy up from a dealer who bore a strong resemblance to George Jones.  Very pleasant seller.  I think I paid $15 for the album.  Maybe a bit less, if I bundled.  But certainly a fair price.  I don't love it, but I like a lot of it.  I think this could be a grower.
