"Shinin' On" - Grand Funk (1974)

This Grand Funk album was an upgrade for me.  My previous copy was missing the 3d glasses and the front cover had a wicked tear from where the glasses had been removed.  This one is a really clean OG with everything still intact.  The glasses are still in place.  The 12" x 24" cardboard 3d poster inside has never been used and the original custom inner sleeve is still hanging around.

"Shinin' On" was Grand Funk's eighth studio album and their follow-up to the monster "We're An American Band" square.  Not an easy task, but it's strong enough, Rundgren or not.  I believe the hits were better on the former album, but the lesser-known tracks on "Shinin' On" are more satisfying.  The Craig Frost keys added to the Farner/Brewer team on this square really enrich the mixes.  And the more I spin this, the more I'm enjoying it.

Favorites include the heavy space-funk title track that opens the square.  The heady atmospheric "Carry Me Through" is a deep track gem.  And “Getting Over You” and “Little Johnny Hooker” are both gasoline for the car.  

Eight studio albums in eight years.  Some bands should be so lucky.  And they were doing it, man!  Pounding and sweating and touring their asses off.  "Shinin' On" is not a great album, but it's a good one.  Not terribly expensive when you find it, but snagging a gimmix album that's clean and still intact is getting harder all the time.

"...Your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea." ~ Looking Glass ~ Elliot Lurie was a singer/songwriter for the 70s band Looking Glass . The band recorded two albums and had a couple of hits along with a handful of deep-track FM cuts.  And as many bands are wont to do...
