"Julie Is Her Name" - Julie London (1955)
"Julie Is Her Name" is a late-night album spin. The music throws a quiet and smoldering drowsy-cool aura in the air. Julie London sings her words with pillows and lace. No fluttering up and down the scales like a runaway alphabet. No screaming high notes. No high-roof bellowing. Just words being sung in a soft whispery timbre that gently takes the kinks out of your tight stressed muscles. And that's the awesome guitarist Barney Kessel floating accompaniment out into the great unknown. Simply a nice square to play, whether alone or for background mood.
And some of you might think you don't need this one. But I'm telling you, you do. "Julie Is Her Name" is like a time machine that'll make you feel like you're in an old Bob Hope picture finding yourself dreamy-eyed and goo-goo over a lovely songstress in a lounge somewhere singing her life story...and you wanting to be her hero. Or maybe not. But my point is...it will definitely make you want to kick your shoes off and raise a glass. With an open mind, there's no telling.
"Julie Is Her Name" - Julie London (back)
Favorites...well, this is pretty much a 'set it and forget it' kind of album. Just drop the needle and make yourself comfortable.
"Julie Is Her Name" has become a bit of an iconic album, not just for Julie London, but for the genre of vocal-jazz torch standards, as well. It's a cool inexpensive pick-up and pretty easy to find. My copy was only $5.00. I have no idea what other Julie London albums sound like, (she made a bunch of'em), but this one was her debut and it's a good place to start.
