"You Won't Remember Dying" - Bulbous Creation (1971 - Rei 2021)
As the story goes, in 1971 Bulbous Creation from Prairie Village, Kansas scraped together enough money to record some songs but forgot to leave enough green paper in their pockets to press any albums. So the band just broke up. The songs gathered dust somewhere, and as rock-n-roll stories go...another band done gone. I'm sure there's much more detail to this epistle but that's about the crux of it. By the way, Prairie Village is about a three-hour drive northeast of Wichita.
Fast forward to 1994, and the Numero Group label caught wind of the music and officially pressed the band's songs to wax. Now known as..."You Won't Remember Dying" ... Bulbous Creation's only album has become a bit of a sought-after stoner square and originals are getting pricey.
"You Won't Remember Dying" is a heavy wonderfully unpolished stoner rock album filled with some excellent fuzzed-out guitar-driven stories from the dark side. Atmospheric gloom with runaway lyrics. The vocals are odd, but not in a bad way. And the drums and bass both sound sincere in their delivery. I listened to this square with headphones late one night by myself and it kind of spooked me out. At times, the sounds of early Bloodrock can be found in the spin. And I really enjoyed it.
"You Won't Remember Dying" - Bulbous Creation (back)
Favorites include the soft hypnotic "End Of The Page." The eight-plus minute "Let's Go To The Sea" is a heavy psych rock deep track. "Fever Machine Man" is a manic insane anti-war trip that gets better with each spin. Love the fuzzed-out "Hooked" about a drug addict's withdrawal.
This is a 2021 Numero Group pressing on light beige-colored vinyl. (The label calls it Bulbous Beige.) It's housed in a nice quality non-paper sleeve which is always appreciated. The album cover is different from the original "red skeleton" cover. This one has a sepia photo of the band standing in creepy woods surrounded by early morning fog. A farmhouse can be seen peaking through the brush and reminds me of one of those "don't go over there!" movies. The vinyl sounds really good as well. I read somewhere it's supposed to be a limited press, but I think we all know how that can play out. But this wasn't the selling point for me anyway, so if it is, well...bonus! If you like that heavy stoner rock stuff, this early Kansas band is all kinds of fun.
