"Golden Earring" - Golden Earring (1970)
Golden Earring's eponymous album, sometimes referred to as the "Wall of Dolls" album (just look at the back cover), was already the Dutch rock band's sixth album, and yet it still left them virtually unknown in the States. I mean, Golden Earring seems to have already lived a lifetime before the US ever caught wind of them. That, of course, would finally happen three years later when the band dropped what would become their signature song, "Radar Love," from the "Moontan" album. However, this 1970 offering already sounds like fractured pieces from Classic Rock albums yet to come. Very balanced in the spectrum. It's not easy to find, but definitely one with plenty of bang-bang in the wax.
The album has everything I want. It's a banger with driving guitar that rocks, but then can chill in much the way Zeppelin could mellow out without losing balls and ramp back up again. There are dustings of an overall prog-psych vibe in places, thanks, in part, to some Tull-ish flute that drops in from time to time...but without taking over. And even some doom to tease the palate. The band sounds well-seasoned, and they really complement and bounce off each other. The haunting cool aura on this square gets into your head and doesn't let go. Nothing on here quite as electric as "Radar Love", one of the best driving songs ever, but what's on here is really good.

This is a promo copy on the Dwarf Records label. The label is orange with a Dutch-like elf throwing a peace sign to everyone. As you might guess, Dwarf Records was a Dutch label. And a small one. The track-list order on this album is different in some countries. This was an online purchase and a bit of a pony-up for me, but I was feeling the itch that day. No steal of a deal here. I paid about what the median price is on Discogs. However, the vinyl is excellent, and the cover is VG+, and I wasn't disappointed.
