TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Rainbow Ride" - Andy Kim (1969)

"Rainbow Ride" - Andy Kim (1969)

I had a few dollars left on my gift card, and in a bit of a hurry, I spotted Andy Kim's "Rainbow Ride" sporting a $5 sticker.  Being a fan of psychedelia, I thought this might hold a little of that stuff, so I grabbed it.  The album cover was throwing off some pop-psych vibes to me, and when I got it home, cleaned it, and dropped the needle on the square, that's exactly what it was.  The psych elements are fairly light, with side one being the strongest. But overall, it's pretty good.

I'm sure Andy Kim was just trying to rub shoulders a bit with the lysergic vibes that were in the air at the time.  No foul for that.  There is some fuzz guitar.  Some phasing.  Some studio trickery and noise-dropping shenanigans.  All of these kinds of things, but in small doses.  Nothing to scare Mom and Dad.  I dug the innocence of the lite-psych dabbling on the "Rainbow Ride" albumAndy Kim and co-writing partner Jeff Barry have a good ear for the catchy, so any psych dusting added is a bonus.  As I mentioned, side one is the stronger pop-psych side, while side two, with a small exception, is straight pop.  If you like the lighter stuff, which I occasionally do, this album will do you no harm.

Favorites include:
"Rainbow Ride"
"Baby While You're Young"
"Please Be True"

The album comes in a nice, thick gatefold cover.  The vinyl is on the Steed label, pressed and distributed by Dot Records.  You probably remember this Canadian singer-songwriter for his 1974 hit song "Rock Me Gently" and his earlier 1969 single "Sugar, Sugar," which he co-wrote with Jeff Barry and contributed vocals under the guise of the fictional Saturday-morning cartoon band The Archies.  Both songs reached #1 on the Billboard charts.  "Rainbow Ride" is a five-dollar holler all day long.  Often less.  Don't leave it behind.
