TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Spaceship Earth" - Sugarloaf (1971)

"Spaceship Earth" - Sugarloaf (1971)

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed spinning this biscuit.  Sugarloaf's sophomore effort sounds fresh and nostalgic at the same time.  Delightful in its unassuming way.  Prog and psych dustings season the early 70s hard rock palette and rural country hippy swag.

As the album cover suggests, there is nothing flashy-ma-tashy on here.  Nothing to get hung about.  But the musicianship and harmonies are quite good and the tracks hold your ears from needle drop to lift.  The album practically begs you to grab a piece of chair on the porch.

Favorites include:
"Tongue In Cheek"...a "really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really" good jam.
"Spaceship Earth" and "Hot Water" are dusted with light psych.
"Mother Nature's Wine"...gives off "Green Eyed Lady" vibrations.

This copy has a corner-cut gatefold cover with a custom lyric inner sleeve.  The vinyl is a Terre Haute pressing denoted by “T” etched in the runouts. (Should you care about such things.)  This album can be found in the $10 - $15 range and I've seen plenty of nice copies go for much less so keep your eyes open.  It's a 'bang-for-your-buck' buy.  FYI:  Robert Yeazel, who joined Sugarloaf during the making of this album, was previously with The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and Beast.

I've only heard their debut LP which I own and like a lot, although it a bit sounds dated today. Lots of psychedelic sounds. Never heard this disc. Most people don't realize they are not a one-hit wonder. In addition to "Green-eyed Lady" which went to #3, they had a #9 hit in 1974 with "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You." Jerry Corbetta had a completely different band for that one.

Yeah, "Don't Call Us..." is a great song dissing the music moguls. Sugarloaf are to have performed it on The Midnight Special along with other songs...but I've been trying to watch all the TMS complete episodes in order (as time allows) and just haven't gotten to that one yet. About "Spaceship Earth"...the songs are a little shorter with more ideas and I like it a little better. As I mentioned in my post, the vinyl can be found for pretty low dollars and is a nice pick-up when on the cheap.
