"The Seven Deadly Sins" - Plus (1969)

"The Seven Deadly Sins" was a blind buy found in the wild.  I was hoping it might be some psych or maybe a little doom, and it is in places, but it's more than that.  There are a couple tracks dusted with a McCartney-esque attitude.  Some hard rock.  There is a smattering of very cool Gregorian chanting that drops in from time to time.  Black mass-like in places.  Early prog is holding coattails.  As for the psych, the album does have some atmospheric mind expansion going on.  The chanting alone can take you places.

There are many ideas thrown at the wall on "The Seven Deadly Sins," which often happens with concept albums, but nothing overstays its welcome. The musicianship is good, as are the vocals.  The concept is straightforward, if not a bit silly, but all hands are on deck.  I'd give the album a solid 3 stars and it's a cool artifact of the times.  Best of all, the album is a relative cheapie.  Around the $10 mark.  And that kind of coinage is worth a ticket.

"The Seven Deadly Sins" - Plus (back)

Favorites include...
"Sloth: Open Up Your Eyes"...straight-up heavy psych rock.
"Wrath: Gemegemera"...begins like McCartney and turns into Hawkwind.
"Avarice: Daddy's Thing"...catchy with great vocals.
"The Secrets: Devil's Hymn"...Gregorian chanting that grows into foreboding trance rock.

My copy came in a black gatefold die-cut cover.  The producer for this square had connections with The Yardbirds, but little is known about the band itself.  It's rumored they might have just been studio rats.  As for the singer, he's not even mentioned.  The album was never promoted.  The band never toured or performed on stage.  Just one of those "one and done" begonias.  I've seen this album sitting around a time or two before, but always left it behind.  As blind buys go, I've been burned like everyone else.  But sometimes we get lucky.  "It's all part of the experience, Russ."
