TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Black Pearl" - Black Pearl (1969)

"Black Pearl"  -  Black Pearl (1969)

Black Pearl might have been breaking bread in San Francisco but they weren't serving up any of the West Coast sounds that were mostly flooding the coast.  On this music table were the helpings of garagey psych-rock delivered with a heavy R&B attitude, urgent and sincere.  And sounded closer to Detroit, than San Fran.

Vocals are average but committed.  And the psych-dusted jams and rhythms keep most of the tracks entertaining.  I don't love it, but it's fun and I dig most of it.  Interestingly, three of the members were in an earlier band, The Barbarians ("Moulty" and "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl"), and were included in the famous "Nuggets" collection.  This was Black Pearl's only studio album.

Favorites include:
"Mr. Soul Satisfaction"
"White Devil"
"Forget It"

I found my copy at a swapmeet and it was the last album I purchased that day.  The album cover was cool, but not in very good shape.  There were seam splits on both the top and bottom and a tear on the front cover.  And the vinyl was a VG at best.  It was one of those shows where I wasn't finding too much of anything.  I'd never seen this in the wild, and wanted to leave with something, so I popped.  It had a $6 sticker and the seller took half.  After a good spin-cleaning, the record looked and played like a prom.  This will make a good shelf-holder until I find an upgrade.
