"Jazz Sabbath" - Jazz Sabbath (2020)

Jazz Sabbath has a delicious, fictitious backstory about lost Master Tapes found that proves that the doom and gloom band, Black Sabbath nicked their songs.  You can read the back cover and visit Wiki to get caught up.  But it's all just a smart, concocted story to allow Jazz Sabbath to perform a few BS songs giving each the jazz treatment with no bullshit and no corners cut.  Jazz Sab came to play.

The songs are given a clever jazz turn that makes for a very cool almost heady trip.  It's like all the dark gloomy power chords and riffage of Black Sabbath simply stepped into a slide zone.  A slide zone of light, tinkling keys, tasty bass, and scatting drums you might hear at an underground lounge bar.  It's all good fun.  You could pile on about how unnatural this all is, or just dig it for the professional homage being paid.

"Jazz Sabbath" (back)

Favorites include "Hand Of Doom"...a very cool tip-toe that slips nicely into a bop and chill thingie.  "Fairies Wear Boots" is a smile-maker that jazz-jittles in satisfying "say what?" measure.  I bought this album for the head-scratch.  It's the kind of an idea that sounds ridiculous, but it works.  And I find myself spinning this square more than I thought I would.

My copy is the 2020 release with the brownish-gold album cover on the Blacklake label from the Netherlands.  I didn't make the "RSD" Black Friday thingamajig...but those who did were privy to this Jazz Sabbath album on translucent blue vinyl with a bonus track and DVD.  The album cover also had a variant blue tint.  It was limited to only 1500 pressings.  Anyway, I'm fine with the one I grabbed.  It sounds quiet and clean and is a neat curio album to spin occasionally.  Interestingly, the jazz trio is led by Milton Keanes (Adam Wakeman...son of Rick Wakeman) which is a cool biscuit.
