TCCDM Pulls One Out..."An Electric Storm" - White Noise (1969)

Image
"An Electric Storm" - White Noise (1969) White Noise's 1969 debut album, "An Electric Storm"  was eye-opening stuff and an early example of electronica being pushed forward.  Much like Fifty Foot Hose and The United States of America, White Noise was opening doors and frying minds one psychedelic lava lamp at a time.  Filled with early arrays of tape recording trickery, bizarre song ideas, and strange male-female vocals, "An Electric Storm" is an eerie, atmospheric mind-tease. Side one is a trippy affair with some pop sensibilities.  Side two is trippy as well, but much, much darker.  Late-night listening on headphones can be downright spooky.  Fun...but spooky.  "An Electric Storm" is experimental electronica with an avant-garde GPS and easily falls under the psychedelic umbrella.  Not for everyone, but I kind of dig the weird stuff. "An Electric Storm" - White Noise (back) Favorites include: "Love Without Sound" “The ...

(4 For Friday) *  An unfortunate place for a wasp's nest.   Or maybe perfect!  It is where it is. *   A young lady describes what it's like being an Amazon driver .  Wow. On a whole other level! *   Here is a short clip of Aerosmith w/Jimmy Page talking things out backstage.  And it's Spinal Tap all over again! *   A few infographics to run past you.  Visual is the way to go. TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Apple Venus Volume One" - XTC (1999 - Rei 2018)

Image
"Apple Venus Volume One" - XTC (1999 - Rei 2018) From needle drop to label,  "Apple Venus Volume One"  is a solid heady fly-by.  Unusual chords and tunings and melodies, they are all absolutely sublime.  And the ideas presented are beautifully original and surprising.    XTC's 13th album, and last legit album, is brave and ambitious and filled with a melancholic aura of sighs and goodbyes.  There is a Brian Wilson presence felt on this square and it's a headphones delight that rewards with each additional spin.  "Apple Venus Volume One"  may not be XTC's best album, but it is my favorite and the one I reach for the most. "Apple Venus Volume One" - XTC (back) Favorites include: "Knights In Shining Karma" "Easter Theatre"   "Frivolous Tonight" "Your Dictionary" My copy is a 2018 reissue on the Ape House label and sounds really good.  The vinyl is pressed on 200g and housed in a polythene slee...

TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Black Pearl" - Black Pearl (1969)

Image
"Black Pearl"   -  Black Pearl (1969 ) Black Pearl might have been breaking bread in San Francisco but they weren't serving up any of the West Coast sounds that were mostly flooding the coast.  On this music table were the helpings of garagey psych-rock delivered with a heavy R&B attitude, urgent and sincere.  And sounded closer to Detroit, than San Fran. Vocals are average but committed.  And the psych-dusted jams and rhythms keep most of the tracks entertaining.  I don't love it, but it's fun and I dig most of it.  Interestingly, three of the members were in an earlier band, The Barbarians (" Moulty" and  "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl" ), and were included in the famous "Nuggets" collection.  This was Black Pearl's only studio album. "Black Pearl"   -  Black Pearl (back) Favorites include: "Mr. Soul Satisfaction" "White Devil" "Forget It" I found my copy at a swapmeet and it was ...

TCCDM Dig and Flip: "The Terror" - Dan Simmons (2007)

Image
The Terror by Dan Simmons (2007) Softback, 769 pages  NO SPOILERS: The Terror is an epic atmospheric horror that swallows the reader whole.  And the terror is as much about sailors from the 1800s surviving the bitter elements of the frozen Arctic sea and tundra as it is the terror of what could be lurking.  The uncompromising illnesses and matter-of-fact amputations are just par for the course.  Worse still is the despair from the hopeless isolation.  And then there's what we can't see. Dan Simmons creates monstrously descriptive historic fiction as if he had actually been put smack dab in the middle of this miserable freezing journey and not just a passive storyteller.  His writing is that good.  The Terror  is a slow burn which, in this case, only adds to the timeless claustrophobic void.  A wonderfully dark, miserable experience for sure…and recommended highly. "Breach Of Lease"  - Bloodrock / "Bloodrock " (1971) Good stuff. Casey Ch...

Interview -- Snowy White (Singer-Songwriter, Guitarist, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd)

Image
"It's funny how these things happen,  but they're pretty loose most of the time when they do." ~ Snowy White ~ Receiving a message that  Pink Floyd is trying to get in touch with you would seem to be a rewind moment for sure.  Deciding to ignore that message, well, that's Snowy White .  He's a blues rocker by nature.  But he eventually followed up and learned that Pink Floyd, and later...parts of Floyd, wanted him for touring gigs that would last off and on for 30-plus years.  He also became a member of Thin Lizzy which culminated into two terrific rock albums.  Along  Snowy White's rock-n-roll journey, he has also released 23 well-received albums of his own.  And I suppose you could put an asterisk beside another one.  Pink Floyd's "Animals." Yeah, that's right.  Snowy laid down a beautifully awesome guitar solo for the original song... "Pigs On The Wing."   This was before the song was divided into the more recogniza...
