Book Buzz:--"UFOs, JFK, and Elvis..." by Richard Belzer (1999)

"They know me for my common sense.
They know they can't please all of me.
They know I can't be fooled...all of the time.
I am what I am and I'm happy to be...
Joe Public, that's me.
Joe Public, that's me.
I put my faith in the powers that be.
Joe Public...that's me."
The Rutles

NO SPOILERS:
"Americans have been trained by media to go into Pavlovian giggles at the mention of...conspiracy." Gore Vidal.

And isn't that the common knee-jerk reaction we get...when suggesting that our own government just might be covering up something?

Richard Belzer is not ranting that..."everything"...is a conspiracy in "UFOs, JFK, and Elvis...". (He's not ranting at all). Only, that we...as "Citizens of the Earth"...not bury our heads in the sand.

In this top-notch, highly readable and completely fascinating page-turner...Belzer first focuses on the JFK assassination. Well researched, (with quite an extensive bibliography included), Belzer discusses all the peculiar events leading up to and following this sad day. All the various players and motives are discussed with no stones left unturned.

Whether you're new to this information or a seasoned historian...Belzer introduces the many unanswered questions, facts and theorys in an exciting and convincing manner.

The subject of UFOs are tackled next...along with extraterrestrial life and the Apollo Program with Belzer introducing thought-provoking information from various well-respected citizens and documented reports.

Elvis...is never mentioned.

Richard Belzer smartly shares his passions without ever venturing over-the-top and quite simply puts together a fascinating book that will either make you pause (as it did me) or merely have you burying your head into the proverbial sand. Good stuff!

A short clip of Richard Belzer Stand-Up

Of course, RB is better known for his stand-up comedy and as Detective Munch from TV's "Homicide" and the long-running "Law and Order" series.
Richard Belzer...making the world a more interesting place. Good stuff.

QUICK NOTE:
In April 2007, Former CIA agent, Watergate conspirator E. Howard Hunt gave a deathbed confession about the JFK assasination implicating...Lyndon B. Johnson.
Worth checking out!

AND ANOTHER THING:
Archaeology (1996) by The Rutles is an absolute gem.
Inspired by The Beatles...each song is lovingly filled with all the quirky...sounds...strange chords...odd words...french horns...rhythms and vocals that create brilliant original songs that echo with a Beatle-lovers familiarity.

The Rutles (w/friends) singing "Shangri-la".
Let me be very clear. The Rutles were never a joke. These songs are genius.
Good stuff.

FYI: E. Howard Hunt was half a veg when he died. Most believe the "confession" was a prompting (of sorts) by his son, who was angling for a book deal. Unfortunately... Hunt's son has a checkered past which immediately put the so-called death bed confession in question. There have been no book takers... which should tell you something about its validity

anonymous...This could very well be true...although the media spin...if this is where you got your information...lends itself for pause.

Irregardless...the deathbed confession...(true or manufactured) does not...in any way...tuck the assasination events neatly to bed.

Casey,

Some of the allegations about Hunt's kid were INCLUDED in the Rolling Stone story you linked. After the story hit, the rest of the media (broad, general term... yes) debunked Hunt's kid completely. Since it's impossible to look deeper into the so called confession (cause only his kid so called heard it), the only possible way to examine the tale is to examine the messenger. And, he is - by all accounts - unreliable and untrustworthy. Doesn't mean it's not true... just highly unlikely according to those that have looked into his past. So much so, that no major media outlet followed up on the LBJ accusation itself. No meat... a lot of filler.

About the killing itself. Just before Oliver Stone's JFK came out, I had read EVERY book there was about the JFK conspiracy. I was fascinated by it. All the stories, all the clues, all the angles. Even believed a bunch of it.

All until the LAST book I read on the subject. It was so thoroughly convincing I never read another book about the assassination. The book was called "Case Closed," and the killer, according to author Gerald Posner, was Lee Harvey Oswald. One of the reasons the book was so convincing is because, not only did Posner beautifully make his case, he also de-bunked a LOT of the myths, rumors and strange sightings many have repeated as fact over the years.

Like I said. I was INTO it. I read it all. I LOVED the mystery. After Clase Closed, it didn't seem like a mystery anymore at all.

Keep up the good work and don't believe the hype.

anonymous...Thanks for turning me on to the book..."Case Closed". I will definitely check it out.

To be honest...I've never read any books DEFENDING the assassination investigation. So my knowledge is unfairly biased toward the conspiracy.

But...and this is a BIG BUT...it will take some pretty significant explanations to convince me that LHO acted alone.

Pointing out..."Case Closed"...has certainly whet my appetite.

Oh yea...that being said...Belzer's book is a terrific read and one I think you would enjoy. If nothing more than to pshaw at the facts you have learned to disagree with!.

Thanks for dropping by.
