TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Younger Than Yesterday" - The Byrds (1967)
"Younger Than Yesterday" - The Byrds (1967)
"Younger Than Yesterday" falls into the middle of what I like to think of as the band's psych-dust trilogy, which includes "Fifth Dimension" and "Notorious Byrd Brothers." These are the squares I spin most often. It's a coin flip which one is my favorite, but "Younger…" captures the hippie-trippie westcoast elements the best. The album expands your mind, blows your love-happenings, and carries you away long after the needle has returned to its resting place.
The album's vibes are warm to the touch and cool to the mind. Roger McGuinn's vocals and cool jangly psych-rock 12-string are delivered perfectly. David Crosby is at his hedonistic best, throwing floaty, dreamlike thought-bubbles into the air like incense. You can get high just taking the album outta the jacket sleeve.
But it's quiet Chris Hillman who steps up to the plate, becoming a major player on the team…and he really shines on. His songwriting, singing, and playing help keep everything and everyone afloat. Plus Hillman's bass is stunning! Whatever pissing and sniping was going on behind the barn, somehow, it didn't hurt the songs that got pressed to wax. Overall, "Younger Than Yesterday," the band's fourth album, is an excellent snapshot of those fast-moving, heady times. And this spin takes me back there every time.
"Younger Than Yesterday" - The Byrds (back)
Of course, the classic well-known favorites "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star" and the Bob Dylan cover "My Back Pages" are gems. But there's plenty of goodness to go around.
Favorites include:
"Renaissance Fair"
"Thoughts and Words"
"Everybody's Been Burned"
"Have You Seen Her Face"
My copy is a Mono on the red Columbia "Two-Eye" label and looks to be a first pressing. Early, for sure. It also has the "360 Sound" with white lettering and arrows on the label. The letter "P" in the deadwax denotes a Pitman pressing out of the Columbia Records plant in New Jersey. The album cover and vinyl are both VG. The album cover is worn, but there are no seam splits, and the spine is clean. The vinyl looks VG, but plays better. I picked this up at a local shop in Delano for $5 along with a few other squares.
