"Astro-Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000" - 101 Strings (1968)
"Astro-Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000" is a collection of psychedelic-tized songs by session guitarist Jerry Cole and friends. Most of the tracks on this square are the same songs taken from "The Animated Egg" album a year earlier, along with possible leftover crumbs found on the studio floor. Only the titles of the songs have been changed...to protect the innocent, of course. That's the record business for you. Still, for an early cash-in...it's a pretty good spin.
The album was a 'grab-and-run' from the get-go, filled with songs that were already recorded, probably in a short studio weekend haze, so as to minimize as much overhead as possible. But that's alright because this square has the fuzz, echoes, reverb, sustain, and other effects that record moguls thought psychedelic freakers wanted. "Astro Sounds…" is not a great square, but it's fun and does have an Austin Powers quotient that helps forgive the lamer moments. To be honest, there are a few psych albums with bigger budgets out there that pale.
I really don't know how many Jerry Cole albums are out there in record bins, but psych collectors like to track them down. "The Id" is still my favorite; however, "Astro Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000" has, by far, the coolest album cover and is also a groovy snapshot of “far out” times that are both charming and cheesy in all the best ways.

The last time I had seen this album was in a Spektrum Records Facebook post, before the COVID-19 outbreak took over the city. I rushed to the store the next day, but another customer had already snagged it. I have not seen another one since. They just don't pop up very often. But five years later, I finally won an eBay bid for an OG copy, and for less than the Discogs median. I love the possibilities that the album cover conveys. Futuristic. Spacey. Infinite. Of course, the music doesn't capture all that, but it's good for what it is. The vinyl is a solid vg+ and the album colors still pop. Too beautiful not to display. It will be well taken care of.
